So being the internet geek that I am, I checked out 'homemaking' on google. I have been really blessed by what I've found (2 of the links are here on my blog - A christian home and a virtuous woman).
ANYWAY, during my travels thru various links, I found someone commenting on aprons. Here's the gist of it:
The Virtues of Aprons
(Click link for origin of article)
I recently read an article on wearing aprons called APRON EVANGELISM by Maggie, the Hillbilly Housewife. It has had me thinking of the goodness and excellences of this long ago practice. I remember my grandmother wearing aprons; I know she would never have worked in the kitchen without one. I do have a couple of aprons stuffed somewhere around here, but that should give you an indication of how often I use them :).
But after reading this article I have begun to think of aprons in a whole new way. Wearing aprons has practical value in that it will keep my clothes much cleaner, I can bake and cook and go down to the garden or the chicken house without worrying about my clothes, but wearing an apron can also make a statement to those around me. It can give my position as housewife, meaning and respect, just like a uniform gives a nurse or any worker respect from those around them.
I think of all the shows I have watched where the women wore aprons, Little House on the Prairie, Sarah Plain and Tall, The Waltons. These shows all bring thoughts of home, a mothers value, worth and position. I am still discovering all the positive effects an apron can have on a homemaker, but after reading Maggie’s article I am now looking forward to sewing myself up a few aprons.
It got me thinking, cause the other night while I was making the spaghetti bolognese sauce for our holiday I splashed some on my clothes, and thought (not for the first time) that I really should wear an apron while I'm cooking.
Now to be totally honest, I have had a pretty negative view of aprons til now. Mostly because the only ones I've ever seen are either ugly (and I mean UGLY) or those tacky male BBQ ones with slogans (some funny and some crude and some just revolting).
THEN I was at a store in Tuggeranong and saw this really simple black apron with just mum written in pink on the front. I thought it was the nicest one I'd ever seen UNTIL I saw the Emmaline Apron on Mel's blog! I think they're so nice and it's really cool that they are reversible too!

I had this thought that we should all get together and make aprons for ourselves (and even others?) as young mum's and homekeepers...but anyway, here's my random apron thoughts. Just cause I felt the need to ramble :) and just maybe one day I'll make myself one of these gorgeous little babies!!

Well done - blogging on your holiday!
Let me know when you want to make the aprons....and anyone else. I haven't started yet as I want to find some nice fabric.
lol Pam, it does look a bit like a dress doesn't it!
And Mel - I didn't mean to make you feel like you had to offer. Sorry about that. I just thought spending a day doing something like that all together would be really nice, and an apron can't be that hard to sew right?? For someone like me I mean!! Haven't sewed a thing in ages! Thanks for offering :)
Oh yes I love it Kylee, great suggestion, count me in
